FELA KUTI X
For Spring/Summer 2019, Carhartt WIP pays tribute to the legendary Nigerian musician and political figure Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Known for pioneering the musical genre Afrobeat, as well as being a perennial political agitator and hu- man rights activist through his high- ly-charged lyrics and cover art, Fela Kuti was one of the most powerful cultural figures in Africa during the 70s and 80s. Today, the influence of his idiosyn- cratic sound can be found across a host of contemporary music spheres: there are samples in tracks by the likes of Missy Elliot, Nas and Pete Rock, House duo Masters at Work's “Tribute to Fela" EP, it also appears in the work of multifaceted DJs such as Antal, Floating Points and Hunee, as well as the electric piano nuanc- es of Kamaal Williams's work.
The Spring/Summer 2019 Fela Kuti capsule collection serves as Carhartt WIP's biggest music collaboration to date, with a full capsule collection that takes inspiration from Fela Kuti's vibrant album artwork, such as his 1975 release “Expensive Shit," while also incorporating references to tracks like “Ye Ye De Smell" and the re- cording “Live In Detroit 1986."
Meanwhile, Carhartt WIP, Dazed and NTS Radio will once again col- laborate on a short film, which sees London-based artist Akinola Davies to the Nigerian capital Lagos togeth- er with rapper Obongjayar. The re- sult is the experimental “One Day Go Be One Day," which takes cues from Fela Kuti's spiritual roots.
